House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says China is “one of the freest societies in the world” but the non-profit she cited to substantiate her claim ranks the country as having one of the lowest scores for liberty across the globe.
Mrs Pelosi made the remarks on NBC News a week after her simple flight in and out of Taiwan infuriated China enough to trigger days of aggressive military exercises that state media said simulated a “reunification-by-force” operation.
According to Freedom House, which Mrs Pelosi cited, China ranks 17th last in the world out of 210 countries and territories in its total score on political rights and civil liberties.
Taiwan, in the same list, ranks 18th from the top.
